Backlinks
Search engines never give away all their tricks but most people agree that backlinks are one of the best ways to improve your search engine rankings if you do it right. If you do it wrong and dishonestly search engines will pick it up pretty quickly and at best discount your backlink and at worst blacklist you site. Lets look at some elements of this:

If you want to give this a try, place a link to this page on your site (you can delete it afterwards) and run the google search again and you should see your site. Good Links and Bad Links.
Amongst the variety of backlinking opportunities the are some that will help and some that that will hinder, what should you be looking for:
The linking text - the links to your site are great, but for what searches are they helping you with. Your site has a name but more importantly it has a topic. Do you want people to be searching for your site name or your topic. The text you place in the text that links to you site is what you are telling the search engines are the important terms. Lets look an examples:
Now both options above link to the same page but one tells the search engines "cwcwebdev" is the important term and one tells the search engine "website development" is the important term. When people are searching, what term do you think they would use and which would you want your site to come under - Website development of course.
PageRank - It is better to get links on pages that the search engines already respect. Google measures this by pagerank. The easiest way to see the pagerank is to set up a google toolbar (
).
As a reader what would you think, you can see your link of the page, if you were a reader and not trying to advertise your site, what impression would you have of the add. That is what the search engines are trying to do, emulate a human and pick which are good and valuable links. You want you links to do well and go the distance - then use your common sense and only add valuable links to your site.
